New York City Climbing and Construction

The New York Times Building

The New York Times Building

On Saturday, a trip to upstate New York required a visit to the beautiful Port Authority area at 42nd St. and Eighth Avenue where East Village Podcasts caught a Trailways bus.

Due to a long line at Trailways‘ ticket counter, and the fact that they don’t let you buy tickets on the bus, I missed the first bus and had to catch the next one an hour-and-a-half later. The delay afforded an opportunity to view two recent, hot NYC topics of sidewalk conversation: The New York Times Building and the fever-ish pitch of city construction.

First, The NY Times Building

In that it was mid-day, and I was at the very foot of the building, it was difficult to get a sense of the top-to-bottom architecture of the New York Times new building located on the east side of Eighth Avenue between 40th and 41st St. From down low, the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and FXFOWLE Architects-designed edifice has a glassed-in atrium and huge, airy lobby reminiscent of Gehry’s IAC building down in Chelsea. It didn’t appear that they let anyone in to wander around.

On the south side, one can view where the climbers took off on their recent ascents. A guard is now posted behind low, temporary gates, and plywood covers the hand holes which until recently offered climbers quick access to the conveniently-slatted exterior.

It is easy to see how one could climb the building’s extended skin and it would appear that other clever climbers could still make their way past the security measures. The Times building is an architectural jungle gym and the stenciled facade which announces the chief resident of the building awaits its next Spiderman (or woman).

Construction Worker Injuries

Just one block north of the Times building is a new construction from SJP Properties known as “11 Times Square.” East Village Podcasts wonders if there will ever be address such as 12 Tompkins Square Park? Give the real estate community time.

Construction Accident

Construction Accident

Unfortunately on Saturday, yet another construction worker was injured – this time at 11 Times Square. From a nearby sidewalk, it appeared that the injury may have been to the worker’s leg. Above the site, as the ambulance packed away the latest construction accident victim, fellow workers (20-30, at least) were perched on the edge of the building on many different floors and looked on. No doubt they were asking themselves and nearby colleagues what happened, and, silently, if the same thing could happen to them.
